The changing mobility landscape of India reveals that the erstwhile transport modes of the 20th century i.e., railways and road buses are making way for airlines, personal vehicles, shared mobility, metro rails. Rapid technological changes, stricter regulations, new transport cultures autonomous, connected, electric and shared (ACES), state-of-the-art and environmental concerns are shaping up the eco-system for automobiles. Despite these challenges roadways and automobiles will continue to be most prominent solution in India for future. But for that, the automobile sector should be agile, innovative, and adaptable to changing eco-system, vigilant to thwart threat of alternate mobility solutions and must provide sustainable solutions for the future. The purpose of this paper to evaluate various mobility solutions, ascertain prominence of upcoming automobile solutions and their sustainability for future in India.

Seat Structure Comfort Evaluation Using Pink Noise and Human/Dummy Transmissibility Correlation

Vehicle floor vibration is the resultant of different road inputs damped through various transfer paths. Seat comfort, which depends on these floor vibrations, can be evaluated with a single input signal “Pink noise”; which constitutes various road inputs. Transmissibility of seat structure on a vibration shaker with pink noise input includes all possible responses of road inputs. Still, transmissibility profile at vehicle end and component level varies. This is due to the utilization of “dummy” on component level testing on vibration shaker, which acts as a dead weight with dissimilar damping characteristics of human. A transmissibility correlation between human and dummy is attained by replacing the dummy in place of human and actuating it to find the difference in contribution between them for different class of vehicles. This contribution extrapolation from the damping effects of human and dummy is applied on dummy transmissibility.

Impact of Powertrain Dimensional Variation on Buzz, Squeak and Rattle Noise for Cradle Type Electric Vehicle

There are two types of EV (electric vehicle) currently in use, namely modified EV and dedicated EV. Generally, we use a modified EV in cost-sensitive markets where we can commonize platform between internal combustion engine (ICE) and EV vehicles. For modified EV, we use the cradle to support the powertrain components, which connects to the engine mount, which in turn attaches to extended members and subframe. The fabricated cradle has many welding components that cause dimensional variation at the rear-mount attachment point on gearbox, which creates a reduction in the dynamic envelops significantly. The decrease in clearance often results in BSR noise, which we have simulated in the rig as well as on rope track. On a rough road, this noise is predominant. This buzz, squeak and rattle (BSR) noise also results in Tip in/Tip out noise, which is quite uncomfortable for the customer during sudden acceleration and deceleration.

In today's scenario, most of the OEMs use manual transmissions with synchronizer gear shifting system for ease of gear shifting. It gives very high fuel efficiency. Gear shifting is a customer touch point, hence it is very important to select adequate synchronizer capacity so that it will perform in better and last longer. To test the synchronizers, there are many test methods which give the idea about life of synchronizer and its performance, in different conditions. Regular synchronizer rig tests consume lot of time in deriving the results. So it is very important to find out a way which will give same results within short time period. To carry out the short time test or accelerated test, we need to understand the effect of various factors like reflected inertia, drag torque, differential speed, synchronizing time, and gear shifting force on synchronizer capacity.

Transportation has significant and long-lasting economic, social and environmental impacts which makes it an important dimension of urban sustainability. The World is witnessing rapid changes in modern traveling behavior, and efforts are continuously being made to stimulate sustainable mobility solutions with smart policies, new business models, and advanced technologies (connected cars, sensors, electrification). However, the shift is gradual in India when compared to developed countries due to unique barriers to emerging green mobility solutions. This paper empirically investigates public travel satisfaction and the primary factors for the selection of modes for different types of commutes. Quantitative data were collected including socio-demographic, travel mode choices, and preferred future mobility solutions from the western states of India.

Application of Special Rubber Compound to Avoid BSR Issues in Vehicle

Today, noise perceived by the occupants is becoming an important factor driving the design standards for the design of most of the interior assemblies in an automotive vehicle. Buzz, Squeak and Rattle (BSR) is a major contributor towards the perceived noise of annoyance to the vehicle occupants. An automotive vehicle consists of many chassis assemblies which are the potential sources of BSR noise. The potential locations of critical BSR noise could be contained within such assemblies as well as across their boundaries. Engine mount design is major area where BSR noises can be heard inside cabin on various road conditions. Natural rubber is regular rubber used in engine mount applications but in this paper BSR problems are solved by changing the rubber compound i.e., NR+BR (slippery compound). Detailed case study is presented where slippery rubber compound is used which is solving BSR issue and also meeting durability targets.

Twist-beam suspensions are an example of design solution presenting acceptable performance when applied to passenger cars & light vehicles and it can provide an optimal between cost & performance in the automotive market. For these reasons, twist beam is quite popular in use in rear suspension of light vehicles. In contrary to other types of suspension, the twist-beam has a flexible torsion beam connecting the swing arms. The study of the deformation of this flexible element becomes important to understand its performance and durability behavior. As the name signifies, twist beam major performance attribute is control of twist or opposite wheel travel arising from vehicle roll or road input. Current approach for the study this deformation is through FEA & Multi-body dynamics software tools.

Development of a P3 5-Speed Hybrid AMT

The necessity of hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles is well known by now for reasons like fossil fuel depletion, climate change, emission norms mandated by regulations etc. With the addition of electric motor, battery and associated power electronics, the cost of powertrain and hence the vehicle goes up, which is often a hindrance for OEMs and end-customers. With the objective to make a cost-effective strong hybrid, Tata Motors has approached this problem by taking economies of scale approach i.e. developing an add-on gearbox module, which can fit a family of cars, in a P3-off axis hybrid configuration to an electrically actuated AMT. This paper presents the preliminary simulations, which show this architecture yielding a reduction of fuel consumption by ~20% for a B-class sedan/compact SUV of ~1800kg and ~15% improvement in acceleration performance. Additionally, the design and packaging studies show the fitment possibility in a highly congested powertrain bay.

Simulation Based Development, Component Optimization and Integration for a Metropolitan Hybrid Electric Vehicle

The authors of this technical paper conceptualize and illustrate a powertrain architecture for a hybrid electric vehicle coupled with a unique strategy to reduce a real life problem of driving in snail paced traffic. This architecture utilizes a relatively low powered hybrid electric prime mover that is generally used in mild hybrid vehicles, in an arrangement similar to a parallel hybrid system. Here, the electric machine is mounted on the input shaft of the gearbox and the clutch is actuated automatically through an Automated Manual Transmission (AMT) system. Therefore, it is possible to completely disengage the engine from the driveline and drive the vehicle independently through an appropriately sized electric prime mover. The high gear ratio between the drivetrain and the electric prime mover at lower gears can be leveraged to provide low velocity electric creep mode during which the vehicle can function as a pure Electric Vehicle (EV) while engine remains off.

Today’s competitive market demands for low cost passenger cars with lighter, smaller size, peppy response and fuel efficient engines and having world class NVH refinement levels. For such requirements, it is essential to optimize the product starting from the design conceptual stage, considering all performance aspects. Generally, three cylinder engines, due to less reciprocating masses, compared to four-cylinder engine, are said to be fuel efficient for the same capacity. Nevertheless, NVH problems caused by inherent imbalance forces and couples remain as drawback of the three-cylinder engine. However, through optimal design of the crank train, control of cylinder to cylinder pressure variation, stiffening of the engine structure, optimizing the integration with a vehicle through proper design of mounts, NVH refinement levels can be improved.

Body Block FE Model Development and Correlation with Physical Tests

Steering column and steering wheel are critical safety components in vehicle interior environment. Steering system needs to be designed to absorb occupant impact energy in the event of crash thereby reducing the risk of injury to the occupant. This is more critical for non-airbag vehicle versions. To evaluate the steering system performance, Body block impact test is defined in IS11939 standard [1]. Nowadays for product development, CAE is being extensively used to reduce development cycle time and minimize number of prototypes required for physical validation. In order to design the steering system to meet the Body Block performance requirements, a detailed FE model of Body Block impactor is required. The static stiffness and moment of inertia of body block are defined in SAE J244a [2]. The reference data available in SAE J244a is not sufficient to develop a Body Block model that would represent the physical impactor.

Simulation of Heavy Commercial Vehicle Response to Rear Super Single Tire Blow Out

The fuel economy of heavy commercial vehicles can be significantly improved by reducing the rolling resistance of tires. To reduce the rolling resistance of 6×4 tractor, the super single tires instead of rear dual wheel tires are tried. Though the field trials showed a significant increase in fuel economy by using super single tires, it posed a concern of road safety when these tires blowout during operation. Physical testing of tire blowout on vehicle is very unsafe, time consuming and expensive. Hence, a full vehicle simulation of super single tire blowout is carried out. The mechanical properties of tires such as cornering stiffness, radial stiffness and rolling resistance changes during the tire blowout; this change is incorporated in simulation using series of events that apply different gains to these mechanical properties.

Electro-Magnetic Parking Brake System for Electric Vehicles

Regular vehicle has the advantage of Engine resistance even when it is not fired, hence chances of vehicle roll back on gradients will be minimized. This is not the case for Electric vehicles, which uses an electric motor that does not have any resistance offered to wheels that prevent vehicle roll back on gradient. This leads to increased load on the conventional hydraulic brakes due to absence of engine inertia. Hence, there is a need for a low cost and reliable automatic braking system which can help in holding the vehicle and assists the driver during launch in case he need to stop at a gradient. An Electromagnetic brake (EM brake) system can be used as a solution for the above-mentioned requirement. EM brake can provide hill hold and hill assist effect in addition to automatic parking brake application when the vehicle is turned-off. This system will assist anyone who need to halt the vehicle at a gradient and then relaunch it without much struggle.

Severe air pollution in cities caused largely by vehicular emissions, which requires urgent remedial measures. As automobiles are indispensable modes of personal and public mobility, pre-emptive efforts are necessary to reduce the adverse effects arising from their operation. A significant improvement in air quality can be achieved through large-scale introduction of vehicles with extremely low emission such as hybrid-electric and zero emission vehicles. Range extension of electric vehicles (EVs) is also of utmost importance to alleviate the handicap of restricted mileage of purely plug-in EVs as compared to conventional vehicles. This paper presents development of a polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) fuel cell stack used for the range extender electric vehicles. The Fuel cell stack for range extender vehicle operated in a dead end mode using hydrogen and air as open cathode.

In current competitive market scenario and as per customer requirements, front disc brake module is becoming necessary. The brake system design is challenging task due to stringent performance meeting criteria and packaging constraints with weight optimization. Brake disc is very important component in the brake system which is expected to withstand high braking torque and dissipate heat during braking event. In existing car to replace front drum brake with disc brake module, vehicle needs to undergo legislative verifications and certifications with respect to pedal effort, stopping distance and circuit failed conditions etc.

Crash Pulse Characterization for Restraints System Performance Optimization

The vehicle crash signature (here on referred as crash pulse) significantly affects occupant restraints system performance in frontal crash events. Restraints system optimization is usually undertaken in later phase of product development. This leads to sub-optimal configurations and performance, as no opportunity exists to tune vehicle structure and occupant package layouts. In concept phase of development, crash pulse characterization helps to map occupant package environment with available structure crush space and stiffness. The crash pulse slope, peaks, average values at discrete time intervals, can be tuned considering library of restraints parameters. This would help to derive an optimal occupant kinematics and occupant-restraints interaction in crash event. A case study has been explained in this paper to highlight the methodology.

Rising environmental concerns and depleting natural resources have resulted in faster adoption of green technologies. These technologies are pushed by the government of states through certain schemes and policies as to make the orbit shift ensuring greener environment in near future. Major actions can be easily seen in transportation sector. Hybrid Electric Vehicle (EV), EV and Fuel cell EV are being deployed on roads rapidly but even though some challenges are still unsolved such as battery cost, fast charging and life cycle of the automotive battery. Automotive batteries (Lithium ions) are declared as unfit for automotive usage after the loss of 20% to 15% of their initial capacity. Still 80% to 85% of battery capacity can be utilized in stationary applications other than automotive. Stationary application doesn’t demand high current density or energy density from the battery pack as of automotive requirements.

Aerodynamics performance evaluation of passenger cars is important during early vehicle development phase as it influences fuel economy, vehicle stability and drivability. Usually during initial styling phase, scale model is prepared and tested in wind tunnel to check aerodynamic performance like drag coefficient and these are used to predict aerodynamic performance of full scale model as testing on full scale model is costly and time consuming. To ensure its correctness, it is important to understand difference in physics from scale model to full scale model. In predicting full vehicle aerodynamics performance from scale model assessment; importance of Reynolds number, effect of geometric scaling on flow i.e. flow separation and wake zone change needs to be understood and addressed. This paper discusses about effect of scaling on aerodynamic flow behavior and drag.

Composites are seen by automotive manufacturers as the solution to lightweight vehicles without affecting their performance. More and more parts are made of short fiber reinforced plastics (SFRP) as well as continuous fiber composites. However, replacing metals by composites requires a new design approach and a clear understanding of the composite behavior. This paradigm however requires a dedicated tool for composite design in order to take into account the specific composite behavior. Traditional design tools are not able to state accurately the composite material behavior and sometime leading to use high safety of factors and lack of confidence in the design.

It consist of various parameters like mode selection feel, precision, comfort, select Noise, etc. It demands tradeoff practices among various parameters as stated. In this paper, external mode selection system of automatic transmission is explained. Various contributing parameters are explained with practical design approach for detent profile, mode selection mechanism, cable & dampers, etc.
